In February 2017, FPS's community partner, Choptank Electric, presented an Energy Assembly to First and Second Grades. Students learned about energy conservation and "phantom load" from electronics remaining turned on. As the follow-up activity, Second Grade students participated in a "Lights Out" poster contest. The top three entries were student-chosen. The winner's poster was replicated and students then hung them by all light switches in the building. An article was also published in the monthly newsletter about the effort. Students also spoke with custodians in a partnership effort to ensure that all other lights would also be turned off at the end of the day.

Due to administration's concern over energy use, the school instituted a series of energy saving protocols, involving all stake-holders. A school-wide initiative was to institute an "Energy Helper" job in all classes, who is responsible for making sure all computers and smart boards are powered down whenever students leave the room and at the end of the day.
