After a series of lessons on Energy Conservation, First Grade held a "No Idling" Poster Contest to encourage car rider parents to turn off their vehicles while waiting to drop off and pick up their students. The First Grade students voted on the winner. The final poster was displayed in the February monthly newsletter to make parents aware of the new initiative. The poster entries were hung in the hallways to encourage students to also remind their parents. Using skills learned in Writer's Workshop (ELA), Second Grade students wrote to the WCBOE facilities department asking for permanent "No Idle Zone" signs. While this request was denied (as the department was afraid it could be construed as a county-wide initiative), it was still a great opportunity for the students to practice their persuasive writing skills. Students in all grade levels were also provided with a handout on the importance of No Idling to take home to share with family members.
January 2017: First Grade students voted on the best "No Idle" poster for the contest. Second Grade students then wrote letters to the WCBOE facilities department asking for permanent "No Idle Zone" signage.
